Levies A "levy" is the process by which a sheriff or other court officer acquires possession and control over property that is intended to satisfy a judgment against a debtor. A "writ of execution" is directed to the sheriff or other authorized official of the county where the debtor's property is located, which directs the official to levy upon the debtor's property and sell it at a public sale after giving the debtor sufficient notice.
