US Agency for International Development

Formerly known as International Development Cooperation Agency (IDCA), USAID is an independent US Government Agency, founded in 1979. The three units of IDCA are:

  1. US Agency for International Development (USAID). Based in Washington DC, founded in 1961 by executive order to extend assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms.

  2. Trade Development Program (TDP). Based in Rosslyn, Virginia (in the Metropolitan Washington, DC area), TDP promotes economic growth and encourages trade with developing nations.

  3. Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). OPIC assists US citizens to find worthwhile investment opportunities in developing countries, grants loans and provides insurance.
