Humor in Collections

The proponents of the use of humorous labels, stickers, and stamps for use with monthly account statements and other notices to customers would suggest that a statement or notice containing something humorous is more likely to be noticed by the delinquent customer. Proponents suggest that for this reason the notice is
more likely to be acted on than a statements that do not include some humorous reference or attachment.

The use of humor is only effective in situations in which the customer is occasionally late in paying its debts -- such as when an invoice has been inadvertently overlooked. Chronic delinquent accounts will ignore statements, dunning notices and friendly reminders, with or without humorous stickers and labels. If they are used at all, humorous labels should never cause offense. Special note: A humorous label that might be deemed offensive by any customer should never be used.

Opponents of the use of humor in collections believe that collecting a past due balance is a serious matter, and that the use of humor is unlikely to convince a past due account to pay more quickly. Opponents of the use of humor in collections believe that using
humor:

  • Sends a message that the matter is trivial since the importance of collecting the past due balance is being trivialized, and
  • Therefore that creditor is for some reason not serious about being paid - meaning that payment can be delayed even longer without fear of serious consequences.
