Ten Tips on Professional Accreditation through NACM

The National Association of Credit Management (NACM) was founded in 1896 to promote sound credit decisions, protect businesses against fraudulent debtors, improve the interchange of credit information, and develop better credit practices and methods by creating a code of business ethics.

  1. NACM offers three professional accreditations:  The Credit Business Association (CBA); The Credit Business Fellow (CBF); and the Certified Credit Executive (CCE)
  2. The professional accreditation process itself is lengthy
  3. The programs and the course work are not easy for many people, and require many hours of study and work [I know.  I taught the CAP and ACAP programs for more than 10 years]
  4. Two of the rewards of earning a professional accreditation are (a) professional recognition and (b) greater marketability
  5. To maintain your accreditation, you must earn points for Continuing Professional Education. CPE programs help ensure that you have current information and the skills needed to react to change more quickly
  6. To earn an accreditation involves passing what amounts to a final examination.  This test will be proctored by your local NACM affiliate [in my case, the Credit Management Association]
  7. Many credit professionals are able to convince their employers to reimburse the cost of the courses, books and tests.  The reason is that everything these programs teaches helps participants improve at what they do now, and helps prepare them to accept new professional opportunities in the future
  8. The tests administered to assess the professional competencies of candidates for one of the three accreditations evaluate knowledge and professional competence.  Testing is intended to make the accreditation more valuable to the individual’s employer
  9. Professional accreditation enables individuals to speak more authoritatively and with more confidence – both of which are important in the credit function
  10. A professional accreditation helps identify employees who are highly motivated, and who are poised to make a more meaningful contribution to their organization.
