Ten Tips on Keeping your Top Performers

  1. It is important to know who your top performers are.  This should be done objectively rather than subjectively using measures and performance metrics
  2. If you want to do as much as possible to keep your best and brightest team member, find ways to show your appreciation for both their effort and their success
  3. Focus on assigning tasks to them that complement their skills and/or that match their interests
  4. Determine which top performers are capable and eligible for promotion either immediately or in the future
  5. Provide challenging work, as well as the opportunity for both in-house and outside training
  6. Show top performers that you have confidence in them by assigning difficult tasks that allow them to demonstrate their creativity and problem solving skills
  7. Once their recommendation has been accepted, task or challenge these top performers to implement the solution
  8. Try to provide regular feedback.  Also, regularly solicit their suggestions for improvements
  9. Take extra time with top performers to explain both how a task is completed and why it is important
  10. Carefully consider whether you want top performers to become trainers or mentors, since this time spent training other is probably not time that is being used best
