- Be proactive. For example, solicit from sales requests for credit limit increases before they are actually needed
- Volunteer to help in the new employee orientation process by explaining the role and responsibilities of the credit and collection function
- Use the resources you have access to in order to help sales prospect for new customers
- Use your access to credit reports to help pre-qualify strong prospects
- Remember that even if every member of the credit and collections team is treated by most employees as a necessary evil, the credit function is a part of and not apart from the rest of the company
- Cultivate a well-deserved reputation for being highly responsive to inquiries – especially from customers and from sales
- Be the first, not the last person to volunteer for special assignments no matter how busy you might be at the time
- Attend optional company sponsored events, especially those involving volunteer work in the community
- Accept praise appropriately. If someone thanks you for something, rather than telling them “it was nothing” say something like this: “Thanks. I worked really hard on that, and I was quite pleased with the finished product”
- Do not assume that hard work will get you noticed. Get up, move around the office, meet people, and strike up conversations. In other words, make networking a part of your every day routine.
