Ideas for Encouraging Worker Loyalty and Commitment

Being able to inspire loyalty among subordinates is a very valuable skill for a department manager. Loyal employees tend to be happier, work harder, enjoy interactions with their co-workers, work more efficiently and resign their positions less often.  Here are a few ideas to encourage commitment and loyalty:

  • Criticize in private, and praise in public,
  • Keep your commitments,
  • Give your subordinates the benefit of the doubt,
  • Provide honest appraisals of performance to subordinates,
  • Provide specific examples when providing feedback,
  • Correct mistakes as they occur,
  • Make sure that performance is evaluated throughout the year - not just as review time approaches,
  • Treat everyone with respect,
  • Show appreciation for extra effort as well as outstanding performance,
  • Avoid favoritism,
  • Remembers that rewards and recognition work better than threats and warnings,
  • Reward appropriate behavior,
  • Develop specific and measurable goals for every person who reports to you,
  • Don't criticize senior management or its decisions,
  • Never embarrass individuals in front of their co-workers,
  • Don't shoot the messenger when it comes to getting bad news.
  • Encourage social interaction
