Chapter 9
Chapter 9 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code allows municipalities to file for bankruptcy protection. Its primary purpose is to permit debt restructuring/adjustment. Chapter 9 is a reorganization bankruptcy meaning that the municipality is expected to continue to operate while reorganizing its operations and restructuring its debts.
