Requesting Bank References

When contacting a bank to request information, trade creditors should ask as many of the following questions as possible:

  • Date account opened?  Or... How long has this company been a customer of your bank?
  • Average balance?  Or... What is the average daily account balance?
  • What types of accounts does this company have with your bank?
  • Any NSF checks in the last 12 months?
  • If so, how many?
  • Is there overdraft protection?
  • Is there a history of overdrafts on this account?
  • Are there any loans outstanding?
  • If so, for how much?
  • What types of loans are outstanding?
  • Are the loans secured or unsecured?
  • What is the customer's borrowing limit?
  • How much do they the bank at this time owe?
  • Have you increased or decreased the line in the last year?
  • Is the repayment on the outstanding loans satisfactory?
  • Are there any loan payments past due at this time?
  • If so, for how much?
  • How many months past due is this company on its loan payments?
  • Are there any loan covenant violations at this time?
  • If so, have the loan covenant violations been waved at this time?
  • If so, for how long?
